Emma W
Head of Cyber Essentials, National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC)
Biography
Emma is a sociotechnical security specialist who has worked for GCHQ and the NCSC for 22 years, publishing work such as the Password Guidance, People: The Strongest Link, and the UK government’s 2024 Security Culture Guidance.
Emma’s main interests are security culture, the role and treatment of people within cyber security, and systems thinking approaches to security.
She will rant reliably, at any time, about the evils of: poor phishing simulations; blaming people for being bad at security; over-emphasis on technology in cyber security; failure to create and maintain inclusive work environments.
Emma is currently Head of Cyber Essentials at the NCSC, which pleases her very much, not least because it gives her scope to rant about all these things regularly and much, much more.
