Cybersecurity Comes From Culture, not Just Technology

Since technology cannot keep us completely protected, we need a different way to think about cybersecurity. We need to build cyber resilience and engage everyone in the organization to participate. We need a culture of cybersecurity. In this session, we’ll discuss our model for cybersecurity culture, how we might apply it to AI security and safety, and actionable insights managers can use to build cyber resilience for themselves, their families, and their organizations.

Biography

Dr. Keri Pearlson is an expert in managing and using information, specializing in cybersecurity leadership. She is currently a Principal Research Scientist at MIT Sloan School of Management where her research focuses on the leadership, governance, and management of cybersecurity. Previously she was the Executive Director of the research consortium Cybersecurity at MIT Sloan (CAMS). She is the Principal Investigator (PI) for four research streams: Building and measuring a culture of cybersecurity, The board of directors role in managing cybersecurity business risk, Building cyber-resilience in the organization, and New approaches to managing human risk from AI adoption. Dr. Pearlson is considered a thought leader in cybersecurity culture, resilience, and board leadership.

Prior to her work at MIT, Dr. Pearlson held various positions in both academic and commercial organizations. She worked for Hughes Aircraft Company and AT&T earlier in her career. She’s held roles as a researcher and consultant for the Gartner Group’s Research Board, CSC-Research Services and the Concours Group. She has been a serial entrepreneur, building two companies herself, and working with many others in an advisory or leadership capacity. She was on the faculty at the University of Texas and Babson College. Her various positions in her career underscore the hallmark of her work: the importance of generating actionable thought leadership for organizations.

Dr. Pearlson has published a number of impactful articles, case studies, and books. Her recent work has been published in Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, the Wall Street Journal, and many academic outlets. Her textbook, Managing and Using Information: A Strategic Approach, is on its 8th edition, and is used globally to teach next generation leaders about technology management. She’s also the co-author of a trade book, Zero Time: Providing Instant Customer Value, and a children’s book: The Adventures of Hana and Lizzie. She’s serves on the Board of Directors of several organizations, is a sought-after speaker and expert witness, and has advised CIOs and executives from some of the largest corporations in the world. She has a doctorate from the Harvard Business School and master’s and bachelor’s degrees from Stanford University.
